M416 with H3

I realize that this is an old thread, but I've had an M-416 trailer for years that I've used with my '83 Ramcharger, '06 Wrangler, and now with my '08 H3. I'll try to find some old pics to post, but here's what I did:
1) I made four 4x6 tables out of 1x2 boards and 1/4" plywood. The fit inside the top part of the M 416.
2) I had a 2" receiver mounted with some reinforcements, and bought a flat cargo rack with a 2" receiver.
When I get to a camp site, I pull out the tables and remove my camping gear from beneath them (trailer hauls it all). I screw some legs into the tables, connect them, and assemble an 8' by 12' table across the top of my trailer. I then pitch an 8x10 tent over the tables with the entrance facing the back of the trailer. I put the cargo rack in the receiver, and it becomes my front porch step.

I get some crazy looks when I use the set-up (haven't set it up in years). You're still sleeping in a tent, but at least you're off the ground, and the trailer is perfect for pulling down inaccessible trails.

I'll try to post some pics with the tent set-up; I plan to use it at Boy Scout camp in a few weeks.

Screenshot_2014-02-14-01-17-36.jpgI'm looking into making a small utility trailer. It'd be around 40"x48". It's gonna be open top like CJs and have two crossrails across the top to mount whatever up there. 2 kayak mounts, 3 bike trays, another basket. It's also gonna have a tailgate like a pickup truck so I can access my gear without disturbing anything on top. It won't be as big as some of the off road trailers out there but I'm just looking for a solution to not cramming the H3 full to the brim. I don't wanna overload the roof rack so a small trailer is just about perfect for what I need it to do.

I updated the first page of this thread to add the Adventure Trailers Flatbed trailer :link:. The flatbed trailer is equipped with Adventure Trailers trailing arm suspension with airbags to adjust to varying load conditions. You can get it with wheels to match the tow vehicle. On 35" wheels it would provide 24" of ground clearance. My wife does not want to have to climb a ladder to get to the bed and she doesn't want to have to "go" outside if she gets up in the night. I'm thinking I could add a cargo box with a roof top tent on a cargo slide allowing the RTT to slide forward half it's length. The open area of the flatbed would be covered by an awning and tent enclosed, provide an area for a porta potty and easier access to the RTT.

I agree. Not very sturdy. They have one of those set-up on the floor at Sportsman's Warehouse here in town.

I think I would like to have trailer to haul some outdoor stuff and slap a tent on top one day. Seem like a great thing to go anywhere you want and make camp safe and above ground. Back in the day Frumaker was talking about getting a H3T bed and making it into a trailer, the thought has never left my mind to this day.
