Self reliance is all about three things:
1. Doing things for yourself, and having a better idea of what is in the things that you use.
2. Being able to provide for yourself and your family, whether or not the electrical grid goes down, severe storm hits, etc.
3. Saving money! More to wheel with, right?
These threads will offer some tips on self reliance. Hopefully, they will help some of you.
Here is a simple, and very cheap, recipe for making your own laundry detergent. We use this recipe to make about 10 gallons of detergent. It smells good, removes stains (with a pre-soak), works nearly as well as Tide, removes static and even works in high efficiency washers. How much would ten gallons of Tide cost?
Ingredients:
14 ounces of Fels Naptha or Zote soap
3 cups of Borax
3 cups of Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda (not Baking Soda)
Water
Recipe:
[FONT="] [/FONT]Grate the soap with a standard grater (you can easily wash the grater, so no worries). Heat a pan of water on the stove and mix in the grated soap. Heat and stir the soap until all of the soap is melted, do not allow it to boil. Allow the pan to cool to lukewarm. Fill a five gallon bucket half full of warm water. Mix the Borax and Super Washing Soda into the bucket. Add the warm pan of soapy water to the bucket and stir it together. Fill the rest of the bucket with warm water, leaving only about 3 inches from the top. Stir the mixture and let it set for 24 hours with the lid of the bucket resting on top, not sealed down. After 24 hours, you will find it is a runny gel-like consistency. Stir it thoroughly to break it up and mix it well. Fill a plastic container (like an old Tide bottle or milk jug) half full of the mixture and fill the rest with warm water. Use this as your laundry detergent, but shake it well before each use. What you don't need, can be left in the five gallon bucket until you need it, but seal it from now on.
