Hunner's USA Adventures

I started my Hummer experience in 2006. After bolting on some equipment that added weight and even with some engine mods I decided to jump on an 08 Alpha when they were rumored to be discontinued. I do some towing and travel in mountainous areas frequently.
I have done a list of mods and have had some custom fabrication made.
I am more of an Expedition Adventurer than any other type of wheeling. Hopefully this will inspire others to get out there in the great USA backcountry. Hope to see ya soon!
A work in progress, so many trails so little time.

I had some stuff to do around the place tomorrow but if I can convince the wife we take the 98 and H3 and go wheeling for awhile tomorrow. All your fault Hunner with all these pictures. :)

But I'm just getting started listing the places to go in a Hummer. The views are changing constantly. AC and XM onboard ain't bad either! It must be working to get the couch potatoes stirred up! I know I am ready to go. Fall weather hit Arkansas today. Probably won't last.
Out from Moab of the La Sal Mtns. I think the back way to Arches. Neo wood know:confused:

Arches for sure with the La Sals, look I see Neo up there cuttin up!

ok I actually have some without a Hummer in them.

More trails around Death Valley you don't want to be in here if it rains upstream! The GPS mapping kept having gaps, no horizon. If you set up a computer like this be sure to pull fuse 27 the passenger will appreciate it

A little side trip to Colorado and Bridal Veil Falls to cool off. Just happens to be at the end of Blackbear pass, it's all down hill from there!

Dam Hunner!
When are you gonna start bringing me on your trips:p
Or at least give me your truck! Hahaha
You should go against Recon and Bebe again if we get ROTM again. That would be a completely insane ROTM. I am sure youd hold everyone out till the end!

Starting early and early retirement has allowed me to enjoy many years of freedom. Who knows, I could show up in your neck of the woods anytime!
I think those two are in a different league of their own, and rightfully so.
Mine is just an H3 with mods anyone can do to increase reliability with some time and effort and budget for it a little at a time. I have had some custom made items but I either share how to make them, sell them or can tell you how to install them and where to get them.
I concentrated on reliability and functional mods to save me wrenching time, on the trail. I don't want to be limited to where I can go by myself or with a very small group is why I did all that. Carrying all the spares and tools is no good unless you know first hand how to use them.
I showed all my cards on that ROTM and would not want to just cut & paste all that again. I want to inspire others to get under there and go for it. My Dad moved off the farm when he retired and called the neighbors that worked on their cars on weekends, "Driveway lizards" and it stuck and some of them did some remarkable things.

Well if this is helping motivate people using your Hummer to explore,
Here is a bit more of the Mojave Road trip. Great scenery in the spring as the desert was in bloom. I would do this again.
The road to the horizon. We went all the way to those mountains and over them.
DAH_8845.jpg

Navigation was by keeping the "cairns" as the Indians called them on the right. I cheated in case somebody moved them and I used a mapping program. There were some places the wrong choice would have taken me miles out of the way, and back. That could have been bad, consuming more of my planned gas usage.
I also used more gas because of the soft sand for miles.
Always get the book and do some research before you leave on trails like this to get the most out of the trip.
DAH_8888-1.jpg

Lots of wide open spaces. Not much traffic.
DAH_8900-1.jpg

The flat dry lake was awesome. I did some slow speed runs to look for dips or holes and then made some return runs for pictures at speed. The H3 does have a speed limiter unless you have had that removed with a PCM program.
DAH_8930cr.jpg

DAH_8940.jpg

It's a good idea to ALWAYS carry extra DexCool plus some gallon water bottles, just in case. Besides your drinking water.
DAH_8933sh.jpg

Soda Dry Lake, alkali salts. They say if it rains this as slick as snot! Keep in mind there is nothing to winch to out here in places unless it's another vehicle. So, the stupid anchor trick is not so stupid! Actually two is better.
DAH_8984.jpg

In the Wells book you will learn of all the rituals of travelers over time. You are supposed to bring a rock from your home state to place here. In the middle of the pile is a placard with and inscription you are supposed to keep to yourself when you read it.
DAH_8985.jpg

I liked this stretch of trail with the cacti and no I don't even think about the antenna unless somebody mentions it.
DAH_8878a.jpg

and one more without a Hummer
DAH_8763.jpg

What are you waiting for, have you packed yet??

There is nothing better than just grabbing a map and going out on trails and seeing what you can find. I just wish that I had the time to do it more often. Your pics really show how beautiful of a country we really live in.

Yeah and in a lot of cases, the road less traveled is the one with the best scenery that you can see at 5 mph instead of 75.
Like a little side trip I made after Moab. The website said the roads to Yellowstone were open to "over the snow vehicles" well hell a Hummer H3 with chains for all four wheels fills that description. I had heard places I wanted to go had big fines for passing chain zone signs when applied. Even in 4 wheel drives you were suppose to have them in the vehicle.
What the website failed to state was there were still 10 foot snow drifts blocking the passes when I tried that. I also found out and thought of another Hunner saying "when your wheels are not on the ground, the snow is too deep."
5510-1.jpg

Yeah I know that looks like a good place to play out there BUT that is a frozen lake with the Tetons in the background.
DAH_5554-1.jpg

I thought this looked like a postcard
DAH_5539.jpg

However I got to play around Jackson Hole and see the Tetons. Sort of strange after being in the desert in Moab the day before.
More pictures later I think I broke Photobucket now!
Nope looks like Comcrap is cheating me again on upload speed.

Man, I am so ready for a wheeling trip. The Mojave Road is "just" a long dirt road but I love the idea of being far, far away from everything. Great pic Hunner!!! -Please post more, I now you have lots and lots....

Thats some of the best stuff. Not too hard on the truck and can truly be an adventure. This road is now on my MUST do list. Haha anyone down for this run in the next year?

We did it in two full days. We camped about the halfway mark by driving to a nearby Official camping area off the trail. Three of us had met on a forum and talked for a couple of years. When one of the guys in Vegas said he wanted to go and the other guy from Cal. joined in. We met at a Casino close to the head of the trail the night before.
A great way to meet and we already had a lot in common. We drove 10-15 most of the time but let it out a few times in the dry river beds and did some "dirt trackin" at speed. Fun to test out my BP tie rods over the whoops and gullys. We stopped often as I HAVE to take pictures. Nice layed back trip, no rush, no traffic. There were some wash outs over the mountain that were a little tough to get thru. I had to almost rub the cut on the pass side to fit. There were more tight ones but my nav told me to quit shooting and drive. I tried to run back and get the other guys but they zipped thru to get it over with ha ha Should have staged some shots but I was on vacation/retirement as a photographer.
That last shot of me crossing the "river" was near sunset the second day. There is a camping spot there but me and my nav headed for Death Valley and stayed at yet another Casino late that night.
DAH_8839-1.jpg

If a group of you guys out that way get something together post it up.
The book to get is Mojave Road Guide An Adventure Through Time by Dennis G. Casebier get the sprial bound one so you can fold it open.
