California QSO party

Yesterday I had the opportunity to go play with a BIG HAM station as part of the contest called "California QSO party"

I joined a couple of fellow HAM's at the K6VO contesting station for the day and got to play with an Elekraft K3 hooked up to a big fat Ameritron 1500 watt linear amp, in turn hooked up to rotatable beam antennas on 60 foot towers. Or CQ's were heard easily in Scotland and Holland.

It's quite "interesting" when you have 10 - 20 stations calling you at the same time, try to pick out a single call sign from the pileup...

So how many calls did you guys get during the contest?

I think around 2300, but I haven't seen the final log yet

Wow, with that setup did you really need 1500W? What band, 80m?

Most of our contacts were on 20, then 10, then 15
