Dark Canyon, Utah and Parashant, Arizona

Even with nearly two weeks in the wilderness of Utah and Arizona, we just couldn't get enough. Both Dark Canyon and the Parashant are huge and there is so much more to see than we had time for, but we got a good start.

Despite good efforts to anticipate the kind of break-downs might plague the H2, I ended up having to deal with one that I would never have anticipated. It seems that AMG decided to attach the coolant hoses to the intake and output of the heater core with plastic couplings. With heat and age, the plastic finally gave way and I dumped a full load of coolant on the road in a pretty remote area. I managed to find a level spot to make repairs, before the engine temp became critical, and popped the hood. Coolant had blasted out of the heater core output and covered everything in its path in the engine compartment. What a mess. An hour and a half later, we were on our way with a field fix that was good enough to get me home, although without a heater. If you have a few miles on your H2, checkout the couplings, or better yet, find some decent connectors and replace the factory ones.

Two of the highlights of the trip were a hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon (about a 1000 foot decent) and some fabulous Anasazi ruins. For a full run report, see: http://forums.oausa.net/viewtopic.php?f=118&t=3488 .

Awesome trip.

Sounds like they never learned their lesson. It's a plastic and pot-metal connector on the '90s GM trucks. On my previous truck, it let go and I replaced them with a stainless barb w/ clamp.

Awesome photos, thanks for sharing.

Edit: Also thanks for mentioning HF Airmail, I'll have to read up on that, sounds like a good way of keeping in touch while out in the sticks. Sounds a bit similar to WinMor.

The HF Airmail that I use is very much like Winmor. Two of the popular protocols used on HF in the WL2K system are WINMOR and Pactor, the difference being throughput speed and cost. Winmor uses the soundcard on a computer for the interface with the system while Pactor uses a modem made by the SCS company out of Germany. Both are capable of using HF frequencies to communicate, using regular email, virtually anywhere you travel.

Back when I messed with winmor I found that it was hard to use because there were very few reliable winmor "servers" or gateways

Sounds like this may have changed :)
