Reloader and Jeri, Jason, Jerry S and I did a bit of exploring today. We took the easy roads just to get out and get some dirt on the tires while enjoying the massive crowds of Memorial Day weekend. All pics are on SmugMug and a few of them are below.
It was fantastic weather today. Temps were mid 70s to mid 80s depending on altitude, well below the 100 we normally expect. The saguaros were in bloom. Four Peaks Rd goes up to about 6000'
Great views with Roosevelt Lake in the distance
Here's the bridge at Roosevelt Dam. Roosevelt Dam was built in 1911 to control the flow of the Salt River and in the process the town of Roosevelt was buried under the lake.
You can see the original height of the dam. This was a stone block dam and originally vehicles would drive over the dam prior to the bridge being built. This picture was taken from the remains of the road and you see see a bit of it just ahead.
Beginning in 1989 they raised the dam 77'. The approx. original height can be seen here with the remains of the old spillway on the far right of the picture.
Apache Trail was the road cut into the hills and the mountains to build Roosevelt Dam. Here are a couple of pictures from that road.
