Army of volunteers works with Forest Service clean up

Eighty WyoTech volunteers showed up Saturday and Sunday, 40 each day, to work with the U.S. Forest Service on a clean-up project in the Yellow Pine Campground.
Aaron Voos, public affairs specialist with the Forest Service, said the campground, located in the Pole Mountain area, was set for a three-day project to get the area ready to open for the summer.
“The volunteers showed up at 8 a.m. Saturday, despite the cold temperature and the wind,” Voos said. “They worked hard and got a lot of things done. We left around 3 that afternoon. We worked about four hours on Sunday.”
The Yellow Pine area was selected as the first clean-up project because it is the one area closest to opening and it required a lot of physical labor, Voos said.
“Most of the trees were already cut and we need the man hours, nothing that required using a chain saw, just some muscle,” he said. “We had so many volunteers that we finished early.”
Some of the volunteers worked on demolishing an old restroom facility in the area to make way for a new structure.
More work is needed at the campgrounds in the Pole Mountain area and Voos said the unique partnership the Forest Service has with WyoTech helps get projects done before the seasonal staff starts this summer.
“They saved us weeks of work cleaning up the sites, the fire areas, pads and camping areas,” he said. “They hauled debris and slash left when the trees either were cut or blew over. They raked up trash and carried it out of the campground.”
The Forest Service will use heavy equipment to finish some of the demolition and the signage and dirt work. But in a couple of weeks, the volunteers will come back to help with the picnic tables and signs.
“We are hoping this is just a beginning with the volunteer force at WyoTech. We want to build that up and they will be able to help us out with more projects in the campgrounds. There has been a big push to partner with them and reach out to them for help,” Voos said. “It is nice to see them taking an interest in the community and helping out because they choose to come out and volunteer.”
