I haven't had brake lights for a while and other than a few cursory attempts to remedy the situation with new switches I finally took a bit deeper look. Was expecting some kind of complicated ground problem but the culprit turned out to be the relay. I found out right away because my wife's truck was right there so i grabbed one from hers. The fuse panel is really grody, corroded. I pulled a coupd of other relays to look and they came out without some of their prongs. Since then the key has been stuck in the on position and not removeable. theres a no-start situation, and the windows and one or 2 other things aren't happening. When i pulled the first one (for the brake lights) it came out without a prong too, but I ran my small drill bit down the hole thinking it would shoot the old prong out. I don't know if it did or not, but the new relay went in and worked right away. so now I have breaklights and nothing else. Kind of the opposite of how it was. I know which 2 relays are giving me grief now so it's hopefully just a matter of getting a couple, and maybe using that drill again.
