when i use 4l there is a popping usually single from the front right. only happens on a load , not driving on a flat. trying to narrow things before i start taking stuff apart. to me, it soundl like the chain is jumping in the xfer case. but, is that even possible. it will pop and the wheels stop momentatily then off we go for the next pop. it works fine in all other settings with lockers in or out. of coutse in 4l theres a lot more available torque at the wheels... so i dunno. need help.

Transfer case sounds possible given the conditions you've described but then again could be diff, like pinion gear. I've had popping also come from the front diff but that happened in all drive modes with a loose tooth flopping around that appeared more on acceleration as the piece shifted. If you have any inclination it could be front diff you could just drain the oil or remove the cover - inexpensive and easy troubleshooting.

ya, i have the juice to put back in. gonna do that on everything including the mnotor one day soon here. this happens only (so far) in low range locked when the front wheels are pulling hard, like on a steep hill and the back tires are still on the flat...
can a transfer drive chain jump teeth... given the way those are made, is it even possible. because thats exactly what it would sound and act like if it were jumping a gear... just imagine what that would be like. nd, thaqts what this is doing. at this point it could be a few things. but, im just not getting the feeling its in the diff... but i need to look into that more, i spose it could be a few things on the final drive and axel on that side. which, seems to be coming from the front a little toward the right. but it soesnt sound like its on the outside near the wheel sounds more inboard.
