A couple of us Hummer owners around the KC area have expressed interest in a Saturday trip to Kansas Rocks Recreation Park on 4/28. Here's what I was planning:
  • Meet at the park at 9:00 AM, or ...
  • Meet me South of Olathe at 7:30 AM and we can convoy to the park*
  • Bring a lunch
  • $15 KS Rocks fee
  • Signed waiver
  • We will use channel 28 on CB (I have a spare handheld if someone needs it)
  • We will probably wheel until late afternoon

Several participants have noted that they are novice to wheeling, it has been a while, or they've never wheeled in their Hummer. No worries; this will be a very slow-paced, learn-as-you-go kind of trip. There's no awards for completing a trail the fastest. I wheel with the adage "As slow as possible and as fast as necessary." My goal is to first of all meet some local Hummer owners, second to gain more experience wheeling, third to not break down or damage our Hummers, and lastly to have fun. Oh, and it's also even better if you can do all of the above without embarrassing yourself in front of a bunch of Jeeps. :emb:

Bring any tools or recovery gear that you think you might need. I carry plenty of recovery gear and tools, so don't feel like you need to bring the whole garage. I would strongly recommend airing down at the park, especially if you have stock or less-than-aggressive tires. The park usually has an air compressor available for airing back up before you hit the highway. I will also bring my portable compressor. I usually run about 16-18 lbs PSI. Any lurkers in the KS/MO area, this would be a great time to come out and have some fun with other Hummer owners! Lastly, feel free to bring the better half or kids - several of us will have have our families there.

* The rally point for anyone that wants to convoy with Team Trekker will be the Stanley Bank (SW corner of 151st & 69 HWY GPS N38.85403 W94.67844)

Very cool, I hope you get a good turnout. Sounds like a great event for both first timers and experienced wheelers.

Have I missed anyone? Let me know if you plan on meeting me at the park or South of Olathe at the designated rally point.

I would like to make another trip up there with you some time. I got a big two day photo-shoot this weekend though, so I better make some gas money.
Have a great time and post up some pics, I know your Wench will. lol
I remember some tight trails but good times. I remember now the color scheme and how my white H3 stuck out.
The 2007 group, wow how time flies!!

We will miss you Hunner! Always know that you are more than welcome to join your Northern neighbors anytime you want to wheel in KS or MO. I would love to put together a trip to Superlift sometime. I think we are slowly building back interest in wheeling Hummers around here. While the scenery out here may not be as picturesque as Moab and out West, it is every bit as challenging.

Quick trail report - the weather was perfect! Not too hot or humid. The bugs were not out in full force yet. The trails were mostly dry with the exception of the huge sink hole that I led Joshua through (sorry). I was actually quite impressed with the Duratrack's performance in mud, rock, and loose soil. Airing down to about 16 lbs seemed to be the right combination for my H3. We did a quick main trail tour of the park, then headed out on a really tight beginner's trail. Then we went straight into a series of intermediate trails with some really good descents and climbs on some loose, rocky slopes. Everyone did awesome! Everyone did a great job of helping spot, stack rocks, and help with recovery chores. We headed back to the park picnic area for lunch and some fun on the "vehicle playground". j3jackson did an awesome job of spotting me through a rock garden that at first glance didn't look possible with a H3. A few of us ran the mud moguls until Joshua got a tire slashed. No worries; everyone went into recovery mode and got the tire changed out. A NASCAR pitcrew would have been proud of our performance.
